21st century learning requires students to develop critical thinking skills, one of which is science literacy. The value of science literacy in Indonesia is stated to be low where from 2000-2018 by PISA is ranked 74th out of 79 participating countries with a score of 396. Science literacy is important to analyze problems and connect them with scientific facts. This study aims to improve the science literacy skills of junior high schools in Sukoharjo through the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning
model on the classification of living things. This study used a Quasi-experimental method with a One Group Pretest-Posttest design. The research sample was Class VII E students totaling 30 students. Data collection techniques in this study were science literacy test questions consisting of 7 description questions and teacher interview sheets. The data analysis technique
was carried out by quantitative descriptive method. The results showed a significant increase in students' science literacy with the average student science literacy score increasing to 77.83 (high category), and the N-Gain score test results of 0.55 (medium category). In addition, according to PISA 2018 indicators, students showed good ability in explaining phenomena scientifically (83.5%) and interpreting scientific data and evidence (77.7%), although there were still challenges in evaluating
and designing scientific investigations (64.2%). Based on these findings, Problem Based Learning (PBL) is proven to have an effect on improving science literacy skills.
