Abstract

Beach sand in Indonesia contains high silica crystals in the form of SiO2. High purity silica can be used
as a raw material for zeolite synthesis, one of them is ZSM-5 (Zeolite Socony Mobile-5). ZSM-5 can be used as a catalyst because it has advantages in structure and temperature resistance. Therefore, ZSM-5 is expensive so that if it can be synthesized by ourselves, it is very profitable. The research aims to determine the effect of the composition of SiO2 / Al2O3 in synthesis of ZSM-5 from beach sand silica. The research was done in 3 stages consist of (1) purification of beach sand, (2) extraction of beach sand silica, and (3) synthesis of ZSM-5. The results of the research showed that (1) the purity of extracted silica was 97.2%, (2) the composition of Si87Al9 resulted ZSM-5 better than that of Si89Al7.
