Hydrogenolysis of biomass-derived furfural (FFR) to 1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PeD) is a critical route for
sustaining fine chemicals. Development of nickel-yttrium oxide catalysts has been successfully synthesized with two different treatments. The first catalyst, Ni-Y(n)HT catalyst, was synthesized by direct reduction from nickelyttrium hydroxides mixture. The mixture of nickel-yttrium hydroxides from the same preparation procedure was calcined as a pretreatment and subsequence reduced using hydrogen gas giving Ni-Y2O3(n)T catalyst. The reduced of catalysts consists of nickel(0) and yttrium oxide with the difference in crystallinity. The difference in catalytic performance between both type catalysts showed in the production of 1,5-PeD from hydrogenolysis of FFR. Catalytic behavior of catalysts is similar and Ni(0)-Y2O3 boundaries is critical for cleavage C-O bond of furan ring.
