Papaya seed waste in Indonesia is abundant and contains oil that has the potential to be transesterified into fatty acid methyl esters. This study aims to determine: (1) the optimum conditions for methyl
ester synthesis with two stages of reaction, (2) the character of the transesterified methy-ester mixture (3)
the potential as biodiesel and its constituent components. Several stages in this study were (1) isolation of
oil from papaya seeds, (2) making fatty acid methyl esters from papaya seeds, (3) characterization of
synthesized compounds including physical properties: viscosity, refractive index, density, acid number test,
(4) the determination of the methyl ester component was carried out by analyzing the results of GC-MS.
The optimum conditions for the synthesis were obtained at a KOH concentration of 1% w/w, with a methyl
ester yield of 75.82% w/w. The characteristics of the yield compound are density 0.85 g /mL, refractive
index 1.44, viscosity 4.76 cSt and acid number 0.70 mg KOH / g which are included in the SNI biodiesel
range, so they have the potential to be biodiesel.
