Abstract

Surfactant is an active ingredient in the detergent, soap, shampoo and others. Using large numbers of
surfactant has an impact on environmental contamination, such as water pollution. It is necessary to determine
the concentration of surfactant in contaminated water. Determination of surfactant is generally done with
visible light spectrometry method through the extraction process. However, the extraction process is time
consuming and requires a number of solvents which cause many of these methods are not effective and efficient
in analysis. In this research, the analytical method of anionic surfactant has been developed based on flow
injection analysis using preconcentration techniques with C18 mini-column and detection by visible light
spectrometry. Anionic surfactant (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate/ SDS) made ion pair formation with cationic dyes
(Brilliant Green/ BG) in C18 mini-column. Ion pair can be eluted with organic solvents such as methanolchloroform (1:9). The visible spectrum of BG-SDS ion pair has a maximum absorption at 629 nm. The results
also show that BG-SDS ion-pair formed optimum at pH 6. Preliminary analysis showed a linear relationship
between SDS concentration variations with ion-pair absorbance value. The increasing concentration of SDS
causes the absorbance value increase.
