Abstract

This research was performed to: (1) utilize newspaper as raw material for bioethanol production and (2) examine the effectively of bioethanol purification of newspaper by using Na2SO4, CaCl2and MgSO4 substances. This research was used by experimental method. First step of bioethanol production wasconducted using a pretreatment process to break down the lignin content. Hydrolysis of newspaper was done enzymatically using the cellulose enzyme. Bioethanol purification method of newspaper was done through destillation and desiccantion methods using MgSO4, Na2SO4, and  CaCl2 as drying agent. Bioethanol characterization was determined by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (GCMS) and  Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results of this research indicated as follows: (1) newspaper can be used as raw material for second generation of bioethanol production with pretreatment process, enzymatical hydrolysis, fermentation, and destillation and (2) NaSO4, CaCl2, and MgSO4 substances can be used to purify bioethanol with MgSO4 as the most optimum substances for  purifying bioethanol from newspaper.
